Valley Vista Rd up the south side of Camelback. Has grades from 4% to 20% in less than a half mile. 2 very steep switchbacks.

Set baseline time this morning:
Time: 00:04:01
Avg HR: 168
Max HR: 175
Max MPH: 11.5
Avg MPH: 5.9

Last time I did this road about 2 months ago I had to use my lowest gear and had to slow to a near stop at the first switchback to catch my breath. Today I cruised up it and still had 2 gears left, and didn't even hit my lactate threshold...I know I had quite a bit left at the top.

I can't wait for my next test on this piece. I think I can really fly this one next time.

Until recently, the most scary was the moment (and subsequent irrational behaviors) that my parents decided to become recreational Bikers. Not cyclists, but bikers...you know the one's I'm talking about. The ones that ride around on super loud American built motorcycles, growing their hair long (guy's heads, women's armpits), wearing denim and leather, drinking mass produced American beers from aluminum cans, and having Easy Rider viewing parties (the way regular people do with Monty Python and the Holy Grail). It was at this time that they also decided helmet are for fags...and not the sort of endearing, pretending to be socially-anti-conscience kinda way, but for the ass-pounding, going straight to hell, stay the hell away from my children kinda way.

Mind you, it took a while, but I finally came to terms with my parents trying to kill themselves by getting run over by Peterbuilts or by getting mistaken for "real bikers" in a 1960's gangland shootout. After all, they have to grow up and leave the nest someday.

Ok, enough about my previous scary moment. Fast forward to present day. Yesterday, my beautiful wife of 19 years had heart surgery...yup, that's fight, fucking HEART SURGERY. Ok, it wasn't "crack your chest open" heart surgery, but they did use a catheter to go up her femoral artery into her heart and then use electricity to BURN out a section of the wall of her heart. Not Trivial Folks! Complications during a surgery like this can mean at a minimum having to install a pace maker, and you can guess what the most severe outcome could have been.

We spent all day sweating bullets, knowing full well what the risks were, as the surgery kept getting delayed longer and longer. Finally Christine went in, and for 4 hours we all held our breath. Fortunately after all that time, they doctor came to tell us that she was fine, and surgery had been a huge success. The surgery was not without it's difficulties, but she came out unscathed and should be able to train for triathlons without having to worry about having a heart attack.

I am very thankful to Dr. Chan for not only being an extremely competent surgeon, but a fantastic person too. I am in his debt. Science rules!
